Academic & Political Activities Committee

The Academic & Political Activities committee consists of 8 people and aims to organise academic and insightful events all year round. This includes events like lectures and guest panels, movie & debate nights, alumni events and informational sessions for all Sociology students of all years.

Main Goal:
This year the committee has worked together to organise events including:
The Halloween movie bingo night: in which we saw a traditional Halloween movie and broke it down to its stereotypes, followed by games afterward
The Other Perspectives: this is an annual event in which SEC partners with other associations to present a discussion with speakers from different programmes. This year SEC decided to organise three of these in the year as opposed to the traditional one, each time with a different association. The first was with Kwakuitl (study association of Anthropology) around Holiday Celebrations and the second will be with Pegasus (study association of Interdisciplinary Social Studies) on the topic of White Saviourism in Development Aid. The third will be with OffScreen (the association of Media Studies).
Minor Event: this event aims to provide information to prospective first/second years on the process of taking on minors/electives/exchange programmes and involves multiple guest speakers.
Lunch with Professors: the committee also aims to better connections between faculty and students and are all set to organise a lunch in April with professors in Sociology.
